According to Holdhusen, this year’s program takes audiences on a journey from the earth’s formation and all its natural beauty through the despair and trials of persecution and war only to see the battle won and salvation return to the people. The program features a variety of repertoire that spans the historical spectrum, including pieces by Palestrina and Randall Thompson as well as folk songs and spirituals from throughout the world. The choir will also present a newly composed work by USD music professor Stephen Yarborough entitled “In Memoriam,” dedicated to his son, Jonathan, who died in a motorcycle accident last summer.

The premiere vocal ensemble at USD with more than two dozen members, the Chamber Singers is comprised of graduate and undergraduate students selected through auditions from the entire university student body. Its repertoire, which is primarily a cappella, includes music from the Renaissance to the present in a wide variety of styles. The Chamber Singers have performed for state and regional conventions of the American Choral Directors Association and the Music Educators National Conference, and recorded several choral works for a companion record series to music textbooks used by colleges and universities nationwide.
