USD contributes to CUNY 2010 calendar curriculum project
Entitled, “Investing in Futures: Public Higher Education in America,” the 2010 calendar project is the sixth collaboration between CUNY, the LaGuardia and Wagner Archives, and The New York Times Knowledge Network. Support was provided by founding sponsors JPMorgan Chase and TIAA-CREF.
Sarah A. Hanson, curator of photographs, Archives and Special Collections, University Libraries at The U, commented on one of the images used, “I was pleased at the inclusion of the lantern slide image of the women’s University archery team from the 1930s to highlight the importance of intercollegiate athletics in higher education,” stated Hanson. “This image was recently added to our digital library (http://dlsd.sdln.net ) and along with other images found there, it presents a nice visual accumulation of the University’s history and the history of higher education in South Dakota.”
The LaGuardia and Wagner Archives, which produced the calendar, are housed at CUNY’s LaGuardia Community College in Queens, N.Y. The launch of the2010 CUNY calendar, Web site and curriculum was celebrated at a reception last month at The New York Times Conference Center.
“We are particularly enthused about this year’s calendar, which underscores our country’s historic commitment to advanced learning and the importance of a strong system of public colleges and universities to America’s social and economic well-being,” said Craig Dunn, The New York Times’ Education Partnerships Manager. “Its launch reinforces President Obama’s recent announcement of the American Graduation Initiative and funding for community colleges.”
