The grant, “Capacity Building for Undergraduate Study Abroad Program,” supports the expansion of the study abroad program at USD, including funding of need-based scholarships for students traveling abroad, program development for students in targeted areas, and faculty and staff training opportunities. Institutional scholarships such as the George S. Mickelson Scholarship, USD Presidential-Alumni Scholarship and Coyote Commitment also can fund the cost of approved study abroad opportunities for USD students.

“These activities and resources, along with increasing faculty participation in program development, enables more students, many of whom are first generation college students, to gain global awareness and an understanding of diversity,” said Chuck Staben, provost and vice president for academic affairs at USD. “By expanding partnerships all over the world and encouraging students to utilize available funding for study abroad, USD can ensure that our students take advantage of this program.”

USD Global Learning, part of the Center for Academic Engagement at USD, facilitates study abroad opportunities in all majors enabling students to complement their USD courses by focusing on language, culture, history, international business or other areas of specific interest.
