USD Hosts 30th Annual Oscar Howe Memorial Lecture Sept 19
Ahtone Harjo’s lecture is titled “Kiowa Plains Artist of Ledger and Painting Styles.” Ahtone Harjo is an artist and educator whose career has spanned over five decades. She studied art at Bacone College in Muskogee, Oklahoma, under Cheyenne artist, Dick West. There, Ahtone Harjo learned the traditional flat-style of painting, which has been instrumental to her work as ledger artist and pictorial style of painting.
Her work can be found in the collections of Brown University, Center of the American Indian, Kilpatrick Center, Center for Great Plains Studies, University of Nebraska, Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology, Oklahoma State Historical Society and Southern Plains Indian Museum.
The 2019 Oscar Howe Memorial Lecture is sponsored by the Oscar Howe Memorial Association and the College of Fine Arts at the USD. The Northern Plains Indian Art Market, featuring original Native American Art, is located at the Hilton Garden Inn – Downtown Sioux Falls, South Dakota and is available Sept. 21-22. Ahtone Harjo is one of this year’s jurors.
