The online bookstore will be operated by Akademos and will offer a variety of benefits for students, faculty and staff, including significant cost savings, ease of ordering and a personalized shopping experience.

Charlie’s – USD’s retail fan shop operated by the university’s marketing department – will support campus customers for both textbooks and retail purchases. Charlie’s will continue to sell to alumni and fans at its downtown location at the McVicker Plaza, located at 2 E. Main Street. A portion of all proceeds from Charlie’s are donated back to USD student scholarships.

Through the new online bookstore format, students can take advantage of significant savings opportunities including an average savings of 60 percent off publisher list prices through the Akademos Marketplace and can compare prices in real-time with an extensive list of book sellers, including some of the largest e-commerce sites in the world. Students will be able to log in and purchase their textbooks through beginning May 10.

The online bookstore will also offer a variety of low-cost textbook formats, including new, used, eBooks and rentals. Students can also post and sell their textbooks on the bookstore’s online marketplace. Shipping is free for all retail orders of new and used books over $49.

“This is an innovative step forward that allows USD to increase access and improve affordability for all students,” said USD President Sheila K. Gestring. “Addressing the rising cost of higher education is one of my top priorities, and one substantial way of doing that is by lowering the costs of textbooks.”

The online bookstore will also support USD’s faculty and administrators, who can access an easy-to-use Adoption & Analytics Portal. This platform offers a step-by-step guide for course material adoptions, recommendations and adoption history, and the ability to compare real-time prices for course materials.

Gestring said USD is proud to be on the forefront of adopting a modernized course material platform.

“Our goal is to not just serve today’s students, but tomorrow’s as well,” Gestring said. “We wanted a bookstore that would adapt to the changing marketplace, provide the most affordable options and ensure our students had the best experience possible. We found that with Akademos, and we appreciate the forward-thinking recommendation of the bookstore committee. We are confident the move to an online bookstore will foster the success of both students and faculty and will position USD to serve all of our students, no matter their location.”
