USD Music Student Finalist in Glenn Miller National Competition
A University of South Dakota student is one of 10 singers chosen nationwide as a finalist for the 39th Annual Glenn Miller Scholarship Competition, a national vocal contest for high school seniors and college freshmen who plan make to music part of their future.
Kevin Phillips will advance to the national final round of the competition on June 11 in Clarinda, Iowa, birthplace of the leader whose band was the most popular and innovative of the Big Band Era in the 1930s and 1940s. Scholarships of $1,000, $2,000 and $3,000 will be awarded to winners of the instrumental and vocal competitions that can be used toward education expenses.
Phillips, a native of Colton, will be a sophomore at USD this fall. He’s majoring in music education and vocal performance under Tracelyn Gesteland in USD’s College of Fine Arts.
