USD Night at the Washington Pavilion takes center stage Saturday
Washington Pavilion’s Husby Performing Arts Center will host more than 200 USD students in 10 musical and theatrical ensembles, including performances by the Chamber Singers, USD Jazz Ensemble, USD’s Symphonic Band, the University Symphony Orchestra, USD Opera, theatre students from the New York Showcase, an intense display of stage combat, a dance from “Brigadoon” and a dramatic scene from “Medea.” The event, which is free and open to the public, also features student art and graphic design work along with printmaking and ceramic demonstrations.
Producing this for a one-night only show is a unique undertaking, according to Larry Schou, D.M.A., dean of the College of Fine Arts, but it’s also an extraordinary opportunity for USD artists and performers to showcase their talent.
“Our faculty have been working with their groups for months to prepare the performances,” said Schou, who noted that the live performances are only part of a very full day for the USD troupe. “Students will be in dress rehearsal from 1 to 4:30 p.m. to put the final touches on the show, and we will be working all day with the Washington Pavilion staff to set the stage lighting and sound. But it’s sure to be an incredible evening for anyone who loves theatre, music and art.”
Prior to the performances, a reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Schulte Black Box Theater. During that time, attendees can meet with fine arts students and faculty, and speak with representatives from USD’s other undergraduate colleges, including the College of Arts & Sciences, Beacom School of Business, School of Education and School of Health Sciences. Members of the USD Admissions Staff will also be available to answer questions and assist with the event.
