The USD Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Luis Víquez, director of orchestras at USD, has built a legacy of providing high quality performances to the southeastern part of South Dakota. Though mainly comprising university music students, the orchestra is open to non-music majors as well as community members and advanced high school students. With roots stretching back to the 19th century, the USD Symphony Orchestra performs four to five times a year touring regionally and internationally.

The USD Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Ioana Galu, assistant professor of violin, offers string players the opportunity to play in a small orchestra setting. This elite string orchestra provides to the community of Vermillion and the extended region with performances of literature of various musical periods. Since its formation 20 years ago, the USD Chamber Orchestra performs on campus each semester and has performed on tour throughout the midwest. Admittance to this ensemble is by audition only.
