Braun, a native of Chamberlain, S.D., entered the Army upon graduation from high school. While in medic training he was selected to attend the Army’s Licensed Practical Nurse Course to increase his medical awareness. After LPN completion, Braun was stationed at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., where he worked on the hematology/oncology unit for more than two years.

"My medical training and subsequent time working at Walter Reed further developed my interest in the physician assistant profession," Braun said.

In 2003, Braun transitioned from active military service to reserve service to hasten his education at South Dakota State University where he majored in biology. During his junior year in, Braun returned to active service for Operation Enduring Freedom. He returned to SDSU and graduated magna cum laude in May 2008.

Braun began the physician assistant program at USD last summer and he will begin the clinical phase of training in October. He said he looks forward to returning to Walter Reed Army Medical Center and several Veterans Affairs hospitals for some of his clinical training.

The Veterans Caucus Scholarship Program is designed to support eligible physician assistant students in their quest to complete training in one of the ARC-PA accredited programs across the nation. The Caucus represents PAs who are veterans of the uniformed services. Many of members continue to serve the United States in the active, reserve or guard components.
