Stanley, who is in her third year of the PT program at the School of Health Sciences at USD, has taken the initiative to enhance her professional development through being a student member of both the Research and Sports Physical Therapy Sections, as well as attending the APTA’s 2010 Combined Sections Meeting, including attendance at the Emergency Response Special Interest Group Meeting. She also was the first student from her physical therapy class to become certified as a first responder through the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.

“Her devotion to developing as a professional, promoting the field of physical therapy and engaging in activities geared towards improving the health care needs of communities has already been noted by the Physical Therapy Faculty at USD with the awarding of the Faithe Scholarship, one of the most prestigious honors a physical therapy student can receive at this university,” explained Patrick Cross, assistant professor, Department of Physical Therapy, who nominated Stanley for this prestigious award. “Erica seems to do things related to sports physical therapy because of her genuine passion to help others; not for praise and glory.”

A native of Groton, S.D., Stanley’s dedication to physical therapy is evident in research. According to Cross, she is an integral part of a research team that’s investigating the coverage, preparation and decision-making of individuals providing acute care to injured high school athletes. At the APTA’s 2010 Combined Sections Meeting, Stanley assisted with presenting the results of a study that assessed on-the-field decision-making by high school coaches with regards to acute injury and medical condition management, and she has extended this research locally by working with two other students and the guidance of another faculty member, by conducting a similar survey with Sports Physical Therapy Section Members.
