Cadet Hoffman is a nursing major at Mount Marty College in Yankton, S.D., who takes ROTC at the University of South Dakota through a partnership with MMC. She will earn her commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army once she graduates college this spring. Hoffman will also attend the George C. Marshall Leadership Seminar, April 14-16, in Lexington, Va., as cadets from 274 colleges and universities throughout the United States participate in roundtable discussions at the Virginia Military Institute. Conducted annually in Lexington since 1978, the Marshall Leadership Seminar includes topics such as Nuclear Proliferation, Terrorism and United States Foreign Policy in the Middle East.

Marshall Award recipients are chosen from their respective detachments based on scholarship, leadership, physical fitness, community involvement and must hold senior leadership positions within their schools or Army ROTC detachment.

Military Science students at USD participate in the ROTC program while completing degrees in their chosen fields. In some degree platforms, Military Science courses can be used to fulfill social science or elective credit requirements. Any student, freshman to graduate students, from any major, with at least four semesters of school remaining is eligible to apply.
