The three-year fellowship program was established in 2012, with two fellows entering the program each year, for a total of six in the program. Fellows are admitted following graduation from medical school and an internal medicine residency. Admission is highly competitive, with more than 300 applicants applying each year.

The University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine cardiovascular fellows receive their education in the state-of-the art Sanford Heart Hospital, located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.  The program graduated its first two fellows in 2015.
