USD School of Law to sponsor tribal courts forum with Mount Rushmore Institute Black Hills State
Invited panelists and speakers from the USD School of Law include Frank Pommersheim, professor of law and Chief Justice for the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal Court of Appeals. Moderator for this event is John Glover, USD School of Law Associate Dean for American Indian Programs and BHSU Indian Center Director. Additional panelists are Joe Lux, attorney with Costello, Porter, Hill, Heisterkamp, Bushnell & Carpenter, LLP; Sherman Marshall, Chief Judge of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe; and Judge Patrick Lee, Oglala Sioux Tribe.
"Tribal Courts: Accomplishments, Issues and Challenges" is one of several events during the 26th annual Black Hills State University American Indian Awareness Week (April 13-19) and Lakota Omniciye Wacipi (powwow). In addition to the forum, other activities during the week include a free buffalo feed, the Kevin Whirlwind Horse Memorial Walk/Run, the Miss and Junior Miss Lakota Omniciye Wacipi contest, and the Lakota Omniciye Wacipi. In recent years, more than 3,500 people have attended the Lakota Omniciye Wacipi, making it one of the largest events in western South Dakota.
