Youpee, from Rapid City, S.D., was among 700 students selected from more than 2,800 applicants for the scholarship. She will spend the summer abroad studying Korean language and mathematics at the world-ranked Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea. In addition to receiving the Gilman International Scholarship, Youpee also received a Critical Need Language Award from the Gilman Scholarship Program for her proposed study of the Korean language. Youpee is a member of Tiospaye at USD and participates in the Wawokiya Mentoring Program offered by Native Student Services.

The Gilman Scholarship Program offers grants to U.S. citizen undergraduate students as a financial means to pursue academic studies abroad. The program seeks to assist students from a diverse range of public and provide institutions from all 50 states. Award recipients are chosen by a competitive selection process and must use the award towards eligible study abroad costs that include tuition, room and board, books, local transportation, insurance, and international airfare.

The University of South Dakota encourages and supports students to study abroad to prepare them for an increasingly global and diverse world.
