USD Symphony Orchestra Performs Dec 1
“I would like to encourage the university and Vermillion community to attend our Symphony Orchestra performances. Our Symphony Orchestra has held a long tradition of excellence with roots back to the late 19th century,” said Luis Viquez, DMA, director of orchestral activities at USD.
The performance will include music from Michael Ugrich, George F. Handel, Jean Sibelius and Modest Mussorgsky. The USD Symphony Orchestra is led by Viquez and will feature Tim Campbell, DMA., conducting the USD Concert Choir alongside the USD Symphony Orchestra on a performance of four selections from Handel's celebrated "Messiah,” including the popular "Hallelujah" chorus.
“One of the aspects that I enjoy from this particular performance is to see our very own Symphony Orchestra collaborating with other university ensembles and conductors, which enhances a very enriching learning experience for the members of the orchestra,” said Viquez.
Michael Ugrich, a second-year conducting/musicology graduate student at USD, will be conducting the world premiere of his own work "Overture for Orchestra.”
The second half of the concert will be conducted by Viquez, and includes Jean Sibelius' "Impromptu for Strings.” It will conclude with five selections from Modest Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition.”
“The program is challenging, especially the work by Mussorgsky, which features extensively our wind and percussion players on a majestic closure for the performance,” said Viquez.
Admission is free. The event will also be livestreamed on the University of South Dakota Symphony Orchestra Facebook page.
