USD Theatre presents A Midsummer Nights Dream
One of Shakespeare’s most popular comedies, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” focuses on a group of four young lovers, a troupe of inexperienced actors and their inadvertent encounters with fairies who inhabit a forest on Midsummer’s Eve. Romantic intrigues are complicated and confused as the realms of magic and reality hilariously collide.
Ron Moyer, Ph.D., director of the play and professor of theatre at USD, says “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “is a delightful play about the fickle nature of love that is played out comically in several groups of characters.” He also notes that the play offers an abundance of good, challenging roles for students.
The four lovers, Hermia, Helena, Lysander and Demetrius, are played by Lindsey Straw of Ralston, Neb., Avalon Kann from McGregor, Iowa, Randy Niles of Aberdeen, S.D., and Adam Hansen from Wakefield, Neb., respectively. Mary Fitzgibbons of Sioux Falls, S.D., plays the mischievous Puck, while Kevin Kelly from Aberdeen, S.D., and Mandi Jung of Rapid City, S.D. assume the roles of Oberon and Titania, king and queen of the fairies. Thomas Crouse of Salt Lake City, Utah, plays the hilarious rustic Nick Bottom.
Tim Case, professor of scenic design at the U, is the scenic designer while graduate students Jonathan Hart and Emily Forsman design the lighting and costumes. Emily Staloch is sound designer and Lucas Clopton serves as stage manager.
Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for senior citizens, youth (12 and under) and non-University students, and $4 for University students with valid ID. The University Theatre box office is open from noon to 5 p.m. on weekdays and noon to curtain on days of performance.
