Students attending the weeklong camp will participate in a variety of hands-on learning and information-gathering activities, including interaction with professionals in health care fields, medical demonstrations, field trips to area medical facilities, and group activities and discussions. Staff advisors from the Sanford School of Medicine, USD School of Health Sciences, the University of South Dakota, Dakota State University and Southeast Technical Institute will be available throughout the week to discuss everything from curriculum standards to salaries in the health care industry.

The second annual USD Health Care Careers Camp comes at a time when the nation and the state of South Dakota face a critical shortage of health care providers in all disciplines, as the current workforce ages and demands for increased care continues to rise. Highlights from last summer’s first-ever Health Care Careers Camp include a gross anatomy lab tour, a dialysis demonstration, a sports medicine presentation, dentistry and dental hygiene seminars, academic advising and tours of various medical facilities, including Sanford Vermillion Medical Center and the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls.

The U’s Health Care Careers Camp is open to incoming 10th, 11th and 12th grade students from South Dakota, northeast Nebraska, northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota. Tuition to attend the camp is $50 per student with scholarships and transportation available to students who need assistance. Meals, lodging, and all educational and recreational activities will be provided. All applications require a counselor nomination, a parent or guardian signature, an official school transcript and a personal statement.
