USD University Libraries Bring the Art of Anna Mavromatis to Campus
The exhibit is open to the public for viewing during library operating hours, which can be found online. Mavromatis will also be on the USD Vermillion campus Oct. 5 to speak with classes about her art, writing and artistic processes. Additionally, she will give a public talk in the MUC from 4 - 5 p.m. The University Libraries Art and Exhibits Committee, Department of English, Department of Art, Department of Theatre and Opportunity Center are co-sponsors supporting Mavromatis’ visit.
Mavromatis incorporates several elements into her writing process and her art, such as costumes, architecture and altered books. She states that her works “come to her from needs we all share: seeking to understand the whys and hows of one's existence.”
Mavromatis was born in Athens, Greece. She studied architecture at the University of Naples, Italy, holds a B.A. from London College of Fashion, England, and studied printmaking at Glassell School of Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, in Houston, Texas. Mavromatis’ work showcases a variety of printmaking techniques, historic and contemporary photographic processes, and traditional surface decoration. She uses textile materials, vintage repurposed surface and reclaimed books. Her studies in architecture and work in fashion design permeate her creative process, evident in the resulting forms and transformations in her materials, which are selected with special interest in their historic significance and recycling status.
Her artworks are found in numerous collections around the world including the Harvard Fine Art Library in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Muzeum Książki Artystycznej in Łódź, Poland. She has been the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions, invited to give talks, demonstrations and workshops, and her work has been included in a variety of art publications both in print and digital form.
