USD to Host Annual AI Symposium on Sept. 8, South Dakota Biomedical Computation Consortium on Sept. 9
Both events will bring together leading minds from academia, industry and government to explore the cutting edge of AI, data engineering, quantum computing, healthcare, biomedical computing and more.
Nearly every research institution in South Dakota will share one stage, with the academic panel bringing together faculty from South Dakota Mines, Augustana University, South Dakota State University, Dakota State University and USD, showcasing research that serves a range of South Dakota industries, including healthcare, cybersecurity and financial services.
"Hosting these events reflects USD’s commitment to bringing together students, researchers, healthcare professionals and industry leaders to advance meaningful applications of artificial intelligence,” said Debesh Jha, Ph.D., assistant professor of computer science and chair of the 2026 USD AI Symposium.
Matt Schwartz, CEO and co-founder of Virgo, will serve as the keynote speaker. His presentation will focus on AI in medicine and explore what foundation models can see in gastrointestinal endoscopy—a concrete example of AI moving from research into clinical practice.
The symposium also serves as a platform for students, inviting undergraduate students, graduate students and postdoctoral researchers from any institution to submit to the poster session. Works in progress, published research and previously presented posters are eligible. Participants must submit their abstracts by August 24.
“For students, this is more than an opportunity to present a poster,” said Jha. “It allows them to receive valuable feedback, connect with experts and potential employers, and discover new directions for their research and careers.”
Both events are free and open to the public and will take place at the Muenster University Center on USD’s Vermillion campus. Guests can also participate via Zoom, with access provided through registration information.
