The John Wesley Jackson Award was established in 1981 through a gift by Horace and Dorothy Jackson of Rapid City, South Dakota, in honor of members of the Jackson family. Selection is based on criteria demonstrating excellence in the teaching of law, including effectiveness in the classroom; efforts to improve legal education in ways that serve the needs of the profession and of South Dakota; research and writing; contributions to the profession through public service; and contributions to the academic environment of the Knudson School of Law. The recipient of the John Wesley Jackson Award receives a monetary award. Lynn, Jackson, Shultz & Lebrun, a South Dakotan law firm, provides financial support for the award.

“I am privileged to be surrounded by colleagues who are committed to the craft of teaching and the advancement of legal knowledge,” said Kammer. “It is an incredible honor to be recognized for my humble contributions to the legal and academic communities here in South Dakota, especially as it relates to helping the next generation of attorneys and civic leaders achieve their goals within this noblest of professions. I am grateful to the attorneys at Lynn Jackson for their continued support of our educational mission.”

Kammer earned his J.D. at Duke Law School and his Ph.D. at the University of Nebraska. His teaching interests include environmental law, natural resources law, torts, legal history and advanced legal writing. Kammer just finished his first semester teaching a course focused on examining the law through Taylor Swift.

Melissa Hinton was also named the Adjunct of the Year at the law school awards ceremony.
