USD Law Student Organizations to Host Self-Defense Class Oct. 25

The self-defense class is open to all USD students, faculty and staff. Attendees will learn how 'fight or flight' affects a human body, how to recognize pre-attack cues, how bodies naturally react to violence and how to turn natural reactions into an effective response.
“While it is a small step, learning self-defense tactics is a move to making USD a safer and more conducive learning environment,” said second-year law student Ashlynn Burke, president of the Criminal Law Society. “Knowledge is power and learning how to defend yourself in today's world is imperative not only for women but men as well.”
The self-defense class will be conducted by Fallout Shelter Ministries, a nonprofit organization out of Watertown, South Dakota, committed to preparing people for the unexpected. The organization has equipped over 30,000 people with a full range of skills to help them choose safety.
