VERMILLION, S.D. -- Stephen Yarbrough, D.M.A., professor of music and composer in residence at The University of South Dakota, received three nominations for the 2009 Grassroots Music Organization Just Plain Folks awards.
Yarbrough received nominations for "Alleluias for Orchestra," which was nominated for Best Classical Contemporary Album of the Year; "Alleluias for Orchestra," for Best Contemporary Single Classical Song of the Year; and “After School,” nominated for Best Contemporary Single Classical Song of the Year.
Winners will be announced at the 2009 Just Plain Folks Music Awards show on Saturday, Aug. 29 at the Wildhorse Saloon in Nashville, Tenn. A complete list of the 2009 nominees along with more information about Just Plain Folks is available at www.justplainfolks.org.
Yarbrough begins his 28th year of teaching music at USD. This past year, he received national recognition on the stage of the Kennedy Center when the National Symphony Chamber Ensemble played his composition, "Dakota Diary." You can also hear Yarbrough's orchestral composition, "Angel's Dances," as the background music on a Welch's Purple Grape Juice commercial featuring Alton Brown of the Food Network.
