Beacom Flu Shot Clinic Prepares Students for Winter
The program was a collaborative effort between Sanford Health Vermillion and Beacom’s Administration of Health Services Organizations course (HSAD 435).
“We wanted to host this flu shot clinic to provide students a quick and easy option to get their flu shot between classes,” said Jewel Goodman Shepherd, Ph.D., assistant professor of health services administration. “In our course, we have several discussions on the importance of providing increased access to essential care and this flu shot clinic was an example of creating that access and bridging the gaps.”
HSAD students experienced the logistics of hosting an event that protects the community. For the past three years, the students enrolled in HSAD 435 have worked with the clinic director from Sanford Health Vermillion to assist with the administration of the flu shot clinic across campus and in the community. This year, students in Shepherd’s Health Services Administration and Epidemiology course (HSAD 400) were also invited to participate to better understand the impact of herd immunity and vaccine efficacy.
The program was successful, and Shepherd said she will continue this collaboration with Sanford Health Vermillion annually during the fall semester. In addition, she is exploring opportunities for HSAD students to be involved in a COVID-19 vaccination event when they are available.
