“The camps provide unique opportunities for students from different backgrounds but with similar interests to come together and gain experience in something that their school might not offer,” said David Holdhusen, associate professor, chair of the USD Department of Music and director of USD’s music camp.

More than 200 students attended the weeklong USD summer music camp, where students explored different types of music and took classes and lessons. Another gathering, the South Dakota High School Honor’s Choir, featured 150 students from across the state who gave a concert.

“The facilities, counselors, directors and campers were welcoming and really kind,” said Ashton Burke, a high school junior from Chamberlain, South Dakota, and one of the choir members. “I wanted to further my knowledge and benefit myself and my school. I really enjoy making new friends and sharing memories together.”

Holdhusen said summer camps also offer a way for students to experience college life, including eating at the cafeteria and living in the residence halls.

“People are really friendly here and it feels like home,” said Emily Muirhead, a high school senior from Presho, South Dakota. “USD has a really good music program, and I would consider doing it on campus if I decide to come here. Hearing all of these voices gets me excited about college.”

Besides music camps, USD offers summer programs in science, health care, leadership, accounting, robotics and the Oscar Howe Summer Art Institute that teaches about Native American art and culture. USD sports camps include football, men’s and women’s basketball, soccer, softball, swimming and volleyball. More information and how to sign up for summer 2017 camps is available online.
