USD Earns StormReady Community Recognition from National Weather Service

“The National Weather Service StormReady designation recognizes USD has taken steps to prepare for any type of severe weather that may impact the campus,” said Bryant Jackson ’23, Ed.D., chief of University Police. “USD takes an all-hazards approach to emergency management and public safety. We are committed to ensuring our campus community is as safe as possible, including from severe weather.
“Students come from all around the world to study at USD,” continued Jackson. “It is imperative we help educate our campus community on the types of severe weather experienced in South Dakota and steps they can take to keep themselves safe.”
The StormReady program helps prepare communities with the communication and safety skills needed to save lives and property before, during and after a severe weather event. In order to be recognized as StormReady, communities must complete the following requirements.
- Establish a 24-hour warning point and emergency operations center
- Have more than one way to receive severe weather warnings and forecasts and to alert the public
- Create a system that monitors conditions locally
- Promote the importance of public readiness through community seminars
- Develop a formal hazardous weather plan, which includes severe weather spotters and holding emergency exercises
