To earn their spot at ORCS, the team had to place among the top seven teams in their region at the Great Plains Invitational Tournament in Topeka, Kansas, in February 2018. The team easily did so, also earning three individual awards in addition to the ORCS bid.

Political science major Caleb Munce earned an outstanding attorney award and criminal justice majors Chad Wieczorek and William Himmler earned outstanding witness awards.

The team traveled to ORCS in March 2018, where they competed against several of the top teams in the nation. ORCS took place at the historic Shelby County Courthouse in Memphis, Tennessee.

Students attending the tournament also took the opportunity to tour the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel, the site of Martin Luther King’s assassination.

Although the team had a disappointing finish in the ORCS tournament, they had a strong season. By the end of the school year, the team earned 10 individual awards for outstanding witness portrayals and attorney performances as well as placing among the top teams in three tournaments.

Three of the team’s graduating seniors—political science majors Jessica Allen and Gabby Metzger and business major Natalie Gronlund—will be starting their legal studies in the fall of 2018, with Allen and Gronlund staying in Vermillion to attend USD School of Law. Metzger will attend law school at Georgetown University.
