Truran Piano Competition

Eligible for pianists in grades 8 through 12.

Deadline: January 26, 2024

Contestants will be notified of audition times after February 4, 2024..

 

Repertoire Requirements:

Two or three works, played from memory. The works must be from at least two of the four compositional periods listed below.

  • Baroque Romantic
  • Classical
  • Romantic
  • Impressionistic/Contemporary

Maximum playing time is 15 minutes; there is no minimum time limit. Programmed music may exceed maximum time limit; performance will be stopped when maximum time limit is reached (does not affect results). Student chooses first selection and the adjudicator determines the rest of the order. Only solo piano compositions—no concertos, please. No transcriptions, arrangements or pop music allowed. Cuts in the music are not permitted. Repeats are left to the discretion of the performer. One copy of the music must be provided for the adjudicator. No photocopies are allowed.

Awards

Contestants are divided into categories by school year. One first place and one second place will be awarded for each of the five categories. Honorable mentions will be awarded at the discretion of the judges. The first place cash award for each category is $200; second place, $100. The winners will be announced following the completion of each category. The jury is guest adjudicators and the keyboard faculty of the University of South Dakota.

For the processing of prize money, all winners must complete a W-9, provided on the day of the competition. The award checks are mailed to the winners from the University of South Dakota Foundation following the competition. 

USD Piano Scholarships

12th grade contestants who plan to attend the University of South Dakota are eligible to be awarded Truran Piano Scholarships in addition to any cash
prizes. Please indicate on the application form on the back of this brochure if you will be auditioning for a Truran Piano Scholarship
