Medical Student Research

Our scientists and clinicians provide our students the opportunity to collaborate on meaningful research.

We offer a variety of research opportunities that enhance your learning experience. You can participate on a research team, present at regional and national conferences or learn from the best in state-of-the-art laboratories. You’ll be receiving mentorship and conducting research along well-renowned faculty and clinicians who are experts in their fields.

Medical students who have been newly accepted to our medical school have the opportunity to spend their summer as part of research projects. A group of faculty research mentors provide a range of research in which students can participate through the Medical Student Summer Research Program. Research options can change each year.

Funding Opportunities

The MSRP offers awards to medical students to support both research and travel expenses.

The Center for Brain and Behavior Research (CBBRe) provides outstanding training of research students and fellows, feeding the pipeline of creative independent scientists in the fields of neuroscience and behavioral science.

Learn More

The Child Health Innovative Research Program (CHIRP) will provide foundational research training in clinical and biomedical sciences in areas related to children’s health. Students selected will receive a stipend, tuition assistance and the hosting lab will receive funds for supplies. To apply, choose a research mentor and submit an application.

Scholarship Pathways Program (SPP)

The Scholarship Pathways Program is an elective opportunity that was developed to enrich the student experience by promoting rigorous independent scholarship and scholarly excellence at the USD Sanford School of Medicine. Students develop a mentored project with a focus on medical education, bench/translational research, service, or social science.
