Program Requirements

For law students enrolled in this joint degree program, the 33 required credit hours for the Master of Arts in political science may include up to nine credit hours of law courses and nine hours of political science courses may also be counted for the J.D. Full admission to the M.A. program includes several requirements:

  • Entrance exam (the LSAT may be substituted for the GRE)
  • Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0
  • At least 12 credit hours of undergraduate political science credit

Required Coursework

Students pursuing the joint J.D./M.A. program complete the M.A. with an area of emphasis in public law, which includes the following coursework:

  • POLS 765 Research Methods in Political Science
  • POLS 711 Seminar in American Political Institutions
  • POLS 771 Public Policy Process & Evaluation
  • POLS 529 Courts and Judicial Politics, along with nine hours of approved law coursework
  • Six credit hours of electives selected with advisor approval
  • Either POLS 798 Thesis or POLS 791 Independent Study and POLS 787 Exam Preparation
