The Scientific Excellence and Experiential Development for Scholars (SEEDS-T32) is an National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded graduate research training program at the University of South Dakota designed to prepare the next generation of biomedical researchers. SEEDS-T32 complements students' doctoral research with interdisciplinary training, individualized mentoring, career development, professional skill building and experiential learning.
Fellows have opportunities to explore careers across the biomedical workforce, develop complementary expertise through interdisciplinary coursework, and participate in experiences such as internships, teaching, job shadowing, informational interviews, and entrepreneurship.
The program's goal is to prepare fellows to become rigorous, independent scientists equipped with the skills and experiences needed to pursue a wide range of biomedical research-related careers.
Program Details
Participation & Eligibility
SEEDS-T32 is open to eligible Ph.D. students across STEM disciplines at the University of South Dakota whose dissertation research is relevant to the biomedical sciences.
Applicants must:
- Be enrolled full-time in a Ph.D. program at USD.
- Meet NIH eligibility requirements for National Research Science Award (NRSA) institutional training grant support (U.S. citizen, noncitizen national or permanent resident at the time of appointment).
- Conduct dissertation research relevant to the biomedical sciences and aligned with the goals of SEEDS-T32.
- Be in good academic standing.
- Have an identified faculty research mentor.
- Demonstrate an interest in a career related to the biomedical research workforce.
Students in their first or second year of doctoral study at the time of applying are preferred.
Selected fellows receive an annual NIH stipend, tuition and fee support in accordance with NIH NRSA guidelines, support for health insurance and related expenses and professional travel support. Fellows may receive up to two years of support, contingent upon continued eligibility, satisfactory progress, fulfillment of program expectations and availability of funds.
