Welcome to the Department of Military Science

Military Science and the Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) will motivate and train you to become a leader in the United States Army, or in any profession, through a multitude of ROTC opportunities. As an ROTC Cadet, you can be found leading classmates through adventure training, rucking on a road march or up a mountain wall. You can also earn federal commissions while earning your bachelor's degree by taking military science courses, completing a 30-day Cadet Summer Training Camp and maintaining established standards in ethics, academics, physical fitness and citizenship. 

At USD, our Military Science Cadre have the expertise and leadership needed to deliver high-quality training and education on and off campus. Opportunities beyond the classroom involve Airborne or Air Assault Schools, Leader's Reaction Course, combat water survival tests, applied tactics in field training exercises and more. These opportunities set you up for success in various fields, including: Aviation, Armor, Chemical, Infantry, Ordnance, Signal, Quartermaster, Transportation, Medical Service, Military Police, Nursing, Finance, Military Intelligence, Field Artillery, Air Defense Artillery, the Engineer Corps and much more. Students also have the option of going active duty Army, Army National Guard, or Army Reserve.

Veterans' Services, a division within the Office of the Registrar, proudly assists service members, veterans and their families with applying for and receiving education benefits.

In college and after graduation, Cadets find the training and experience they have received are assets - whether pursuing an Army or civilian career. Employers place high regard on the management and leadership skills that ROTC instructors provide. Plus, ROTC looks great on a resume. When Cadets complete the ROTC course and graduate, they become commissioned Officers in the U.S. Army.

Extracurricular Activities

During the school year, take part in numerous extracurricular activities such as the Ranger Challenge Team, German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge, Bataan Death March, Intramural Sports, Color Guard, Cadet Socials and Net Pullers for football games.

Start a Nursing Career

Through partnership agreements with various local colleges, students enrolled in a nursing curriculum can participate in ROTC sponsored by USD.


Full tuition four-year scholarships are available to students pursuing a BSN through USD or Mount Marty College.
