Why Study Health Services Administration?

As a health services administration major at USD, you will learn to think creatively and collaborate effectively so you can develop the skills and gain the knowledge needed to manage health organizations. A degree in health services administration provides a solid foundation for students wanting to work in health care organizations including hospitals, long-term care facilitates, insurance companies and physicians offices. A focus in health services and management can be tailored to your career plans as a leader in health care management.

Health Services Administration

Minor

A minor in health services administration will help you develop analytical thinking and leadership skills that will serve you in any career. This program is a great complement to a variety of majors, including business, health sciences, medical biology, physiology or political science.

Business Administration (B.B.A./M.B.A.)

Accelerated Program

Business majors meeting requirements for entry into the Masters of Business Administration (M.B.A.) program may opt to complete both the B.B.A and M.B.A. concurrently. Students who pursue this fast-track option will be awarded their undergraduate and graduate degrees simultaneously, upon completion of the two programs. Permission to be awarded the undergraduate degree prior to the completion of the graduate degree is available. A health services administration specialization is available as part of the MBA program.

The Health Services Administration program requires that students complete internships, which give the students the opportunity to gain real-world experience while still in school. In many cases, students who have interned at an organization have been hired on permanently after graduation. Students work alongside preceptors to learn about the nature of their work, while observing different functions and responsibilities of that health care organization. Administrative and research projects allow the student to learn about managing and submitting work which addresses a real-world need with real-world implications.

Working closely with the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) - the nation's largest professional society for healthcare executives - HEAL offers opportunities to network with other students and healthcare executives through guest speakers, field trips and meetings.
