Majors and academic programs in undergraduate theatre at the University of South Dakota including acting, musical theatre and design/technology specializations.
All B.F.A. majors (with the exception of musical theatre) enter in the theatre specialization. A 2.50 overall grade point average in theatre is required for graduation with a B.F.A.; however, students must maintain a 3.0 GPA in their area of specialization (acting, design/theatre technology or musical theatre) in order to continue in those programs in good standing.
In addition to the regental and university general education requirements, theatre majors are required to complete the theatre core curriculum. Due to expanded credit hour requirements for the musical theatre specialization, the theatre core varies from the acting, design/technical and theatre specializations.
Prepare yourself for entry into a professional theatre as a specialist in performance. Entrance into the acting specialization is by permission of the theatre faculty upon completion of an interview and audition or portfolio presentation.
This program of study is intended for students with vocational interest in design/technology. Entrance into the design/theatre technology specialization is by permission of the theatre faculty upon completion of an interview and audition or portfolio presentation.
The musical theatre specialization seeks to prepare the student for entry into the musical theatre profession as a specialist in performance, as well as prepare musical theatre performers for advanced training programs in vocal music, dance and/or acting. Entrance into the musical theatre specialization is by audition/interview.
This program of study is intended for those students seeking a comprehensive theatre education or for those who have not yet decided upon an area of specialization. It is also recommended for students wishing to pursue graduate study in theatre, particularly in the area of directing.
