Our programs extend language learning beyond the classroom.
For German students, Kaffeestunde (a late afternoon coffee and conversation hour), German Club film nights and events sponsored by the German Embassy to the United States provide many extracurricular opportunities to hone language skills and acquire additional cultural knowledge.
Spanish learners converse and play games in Spanish during La Hora de la Fiesta meetings and with the Spanish Club, and work with the Latin American Student Organization on activities such as the Day of the Dead celebration.
Students learning Russian and Lakota also meet outside the classroom to take part in activities related to the culture of their studies. Students of Russian enjoy getting together at Russian Conversation Table, Russian Tea Time and presenting dishes from Russian-speaking countries at the Festival of Nations.
USD is home to the Nu Omicron chapter of the Sigma Delta Pi National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society. Every year, Spanish students are inducted into the Honor Society, which hosts events including film nights, cultural celebrations, and Spanish-related service events.
